Limb Motor Prediction
The intent comes before the action. I think most people would agree with this intuitively. I set out to prove this is right and also measure how fast the intent is compared to action.
This project is meant to compare reaction times of 3 different modalities. Eye movement, Muscle activation, and actual movement.
The subject was fitted with EMG sensors and Tobii 2 eye-tracking glasses and presented with two objects, one red and one green. In a randomized sequence, the subject was instructed to reach for the object corresponding to an audibly announced color. The onset of activity from each recorded channel was identified and compared across modalities.
EMG and accelerometer data were collected using Delsys wireless EMG sensors, while eye movements were tracked using Tobii 2 glasses. Each channel exhibited a measurable response corresponding to the subject’s reaction.
The results showed that, the EMG sensors showed the fastest reaction time, followed by eye tracking, and finally followed by accelerometer readings. The EMG sensors were leading the actual movement by about 100ms.
The EMG output could be utilized in exoskeletons to trigger movement based on muscle activation rather than accelerometer data, resulting in a faster system response.
